Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
